2016 was one heck of a year for us. We accomplished a goal we’d taken 2 years to dream up and plan out. Here’s a numerical recap of what our unforgettable year on the road looked like.
Days On the Road: 366
One full year living on the road. The fact that it was a leap year was just an added bonus!
Nights Spent In the Van: 261
The whole purpose of traveling in a Sprinter van was to maximize living space while keeping housing costs to a minimum. That said, we spent most nights on the bed platform we built inside the van and had just enough room between our mattresses for it to not be weird….
Shout out to friends, family, and strangers for your beds, couches, and floors on those other 105 days!
Showers Taken: 146
Finding places to shower proved to be one of our biggest challenges. Although this number claims cleanliness almost every other day, the reality was that going a week without a shower was common. Often times when we did have access to showers, it was for a few days in a row making our grand total sound a little less gross than it actually was!
Meals Eaten Out: 244
This includes every meal we didn’t cook ourselves. Anytime we got fast food, sat down for a local delicacy, or had a home cooked meal with friends that took us in, we marked it down. Sometimes it was 3 meals per day prepared by someone else while other times we went weeks without treating ourselves.
Places Visited: 50 U.S. States, Washington D.C., Puerto Rico, 3 Canadian Provinces (British Columbia, Alberta, and Yukon Territory)
We covered a lot of ground, but it’s impossible to see the entirety of these places in just one year!
Miles Driven: 43,918
The road is home.
Dollars Spent: $20,885.97
This includes: food, gas, van insurance, van maintenance, parking, postcards & postage, and miscellaneous admission and activity fees.
DOES NOT INCLUDE purchase/build out of van
