It’s official. We reached our goal.
On December 11th, we crossed into New Jersey on a cold afternoon, simultanesously crossing our 50th state off the list.
There wasn’t a finish line. No surprise party. No TV reporters. No champagne showers. (But we did get snowed on, which is kinda just cold confetti, right?)
It was Justin, me, and a couple of beers – ending it the same way we started it.
The rule we made for ourselves over beers the fateful night The Bro’d Trip was conceived was that simply driving through a state ‘doesn’t count.” We wanted to experience the country, not just drive through it. We agreed that we’d have to spend at least 24 hours in each state and make an attempt to partake in some sort of local culture to really experience it.
This gave us plenty of room to be ourselves, too. We spent 3 weeks in Texas because it’s huge and we met some great people that we didn’t want to say goodbye to. We spent exactly 24 hours in Iowa because we know what corn looks like and don’t need to spend a week looking at it. But whether it be 24 hours or 24 days, it’s safe to say that it was impossible to really see all each state has to offer.
In less than 365 days, we’ve been all over the US (and beyond) but I still feel like we’ve barely scratched the surface. It’s cool to say I’ve seen every state, but I still don’t feel like I’ve seen every state. We regularly get questions from people asking if we did XYZ while in INSERT STATE HERE. And the answer is usually, “no we didn’t have time.”
As we wrap up our full year on the road by doing victory laps in a few southeastern states, I’m still trying to wrap my head around what we’ve accomplished, and left undone. I’m proud to have complete a goal we’ve worked so hard at. I’m sad that we didn’t get to do everything we wanted to do. I’m excited to re-visit places I fell in love with and explore the stones we left unturned. But above all else, I feel gratitude.
I feel gratitude toward our parents who believe in us and our crazy ideas.
I feel gratitude that Justin and I were able to make these memories together without ripping each others’ heads off.
I feel gratitude for having badass brands back us and help propel us toward our goal.
I feel gratitude for living in this country and having the freedom to explore it.
I feel gratitude for the people that let us stay on their couches, use up all their hot water, take us out to coffee, buy us dinner, share stories, come visit us out on the road, read our blog, send us encouraging messages, etc.
I have so much to be thankful for, but I’m guessing you do too. And if you’re having trouble finding things to be thankful for, it’s up to you to fill your life with meaning. You can accomplish quite a bit in just 365 days, imagine what you could do with the rest of your life.
Although we’ve reached our 50 state goal, we’re not done yet! We said we’d spend a whole year on the road and we’re sticking to that. We’ll continue to post videos and blog posts here through the end of 2016. And beyond that we will keep you up to date with our future plans as they unfold.
I can’t quite tell you what that entails yet. But you can rest assured that it won’t be boring.
